Course Description

  • The Electronic Chart Display Information System (ECDIS) course is approved by the Directorate General of Shipping (Approval No. TR/A/18/2014)

  • It meets the requirements of IMO Model Course 1.27 (Revised 2012) and the requirements relevant to ECDIS as laid down in : Table A-II/1 (Operational Level), Table A-II/2 (Management Level) as well as Table A-II/3 of the STCW Convention as amended in 2010.

  • The ECDIS course is conducted in accordance to the guidelines stipulated in the DGS STCW 2010 Training Circular no. 29 of 2012 and IMO Model Course 1.27 (revised 2012).

  • The ECDIS course runs for 40 Hrs consisting of Theory and Simulator exercises.

Aims & Objectives

  • This course intends to provide the knowledge, skill and understanding of ECDIS and electronic charts to the thorough extent needed to safely navigate vessels whose primary means of navigation is ECDIS.

  • The course emphasizes both the application and learning of ECDIS in a variety of underway contexts. This is achieved through sophisticated navigation simulation that provides each trainee with unrestrained access to own-ship operations integrated with a complete type-approved ECDIS with various chart formats installed.

  • The overall objective of an ECDIS training course is to enhance navigational safety

A trainee successfully completing this course will be able to demonstrate :

  • Sufficient knowledge, skill and understanding of ECDIS navigation and electronic charts to undertake the duties of a navigational watch officer defined by STCW Code, as amended.

  • Proficiency in operation, interpretation, and analysis of information obtained from ECDISkn owledge of the capability and limitations of ECDIS.

  • Management of operational procedures, system files and data

The Simulator

IMC uses the ELAB NAV-E ECDIS Simulator, which is built in-house and is type-approved by DNV for conduct of the ECDIS course as per IMO Model course 1.27 (revised 2012).

The simulator at IMC consists of 12 own ship stations each with an IMO complaint ECDIS Display, Radar-Arpa Display and Visuals-cum-Conning display. Its core function is to provide a continuous display of vessel position plotted onto official electronic charts.

IMC's ECDIS Simulator manages all your navigation data simply and effectively, storing them in databases for the candidate to use again. Its passage-planning features are unmatched by any other system. And above all, IMC's ECDIS Simulator has a simple, logical user interface which will be familiar to anyone who has used a Windows software program.
